Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 21 April 2012 By Thetashkentterror

Preston knocked Walsall out of the title race at the weekend and also strengthened their grip on first place at the moment, North End condemning the Saddlers to only their second defeat of the season with a 3-1 win on the road. That victory for the Lilywhites seeing them move four points clear at the top of the table with one game left, although Burnley in second are still realistically in the box seat as they have three matches left to play.

Carlisle meanwhile have now assured themselves of finishing in fourth place at worst this season after a 3-2 win at Shrewsbury on Friday afternoon, the United goals scored by Pat Brough, Josh Todd from the penalty spot and Brad Potts. The Blues helped in that quest for fourth spot by Oldham who surprisingly won comfortably 3-0 away to fifth-placed Tranmere on Saturday.

Further down the table in sixth, Rochdale were one of the teams finishing their campaign this week, albeit not in good fashion as they went down 3-1 at Wigan on Friday, Bury now hot on their neighbour's heels after picking up a useful 3-1 victory away to Port Vale. Down in the depths meanwhile Morecambe moved out of the wooden spoon spot, and stuck Blackpool in it, with a cracking 5-1 win at Stockport, while Accrington went down heavily 4-0 at Wrexham.

Blackpool's only chance to avoid propping everyone else up this season coming next Saturday when they face Walsall at home, although if they lose by two fewer goals than Accrington at home to Tranmere then they could still creep above Stanley on goals scored. Carlisle are more concerned in matters up at the other end of the table though, and their campaign couldn't end in much harder style with their last game coming up on Wednesday afternoon away to title chasing Burnley.
