Collins: Coming out fighting
Under-fire United boss Roddy Collins has vowed not to quit despite the club's worst start to a season for 46 years and claims the support of chairman John Courtenay in his quest to lift the Cumbrians from the bottom of the league.

Carlisle crashed 1-0 at Boston on Bank Holiday Monday to suffer their fourth successive defeat and sink to the foot of the Third Division with no points and a goal difference of -7.

But Collins says he is not a quitter and he is confident of turning round the team's fortunes.

"I'm not a fool, I wouldn't string people along and nothing will stop me turning this situation around," he said. "I had a good chat with John and we will stick together to get things right. It is business as usual as far as I'm concerned and John is concerned. I'm a good manager, regardless of the start we've had and my track record speaks for itself. I will sort things out.

"I'm at my lowest ebb, but you can forget about me walking away from a battle and we will come through this. I am a fighter and John is a fighter. He knows our backs are against the wall but John Courtenay won't flinch and I won't flinch and I hope the supporters don't either."

There have been calls from fans for the controversial Dubliner to quit after he struggled to follow up last season's 22nd-place finish with the sort of start that he had promised after an extensive pre-season programme which included a five-game tour of Ireland. Last week Collins admitted there had been "rumblings" about his position from people inside the club.

Things came to a head at York Street where United had Lee Maddison sent off late in the game and Collins himself was then ordered off by the officials after a disagreement on the touchline in time added on for injuries.

To add to United's day of misery, young midfielder Will McDonagh was arrested in the city centre in the early hours of Tuesday morning and charged with assaulting a police officer.
