Byrne comes on trial - but it's no go for Tino

Byrne: United trial
United are taking the Wimbledon left-back Des Byrne on a week's trial but Darlington's hopes of showcasing former Colombian World Cup star Faustino Asprilla are in tatters.

The Cumbrians are to run the rule over Byrne for a week as manager Roddy Collins believes he can add quality and depth to their squad. Byrne was recently acquitted after a High Court case in which he was accused with the Chelsea pair of John Terry and Jody Morris of assault following incidents in a London night club.

Asprilla was paraded in front of the fans before Tuesday night's game at Feethams between Darlo and United. But he was reported as having left on a flight for the Middle East this morning and seems to have walked out on the Third Division club and their flamboyant and often controversial owner, George Reynolds. He wanted to make Asprilla the centrepiece of a team that needs to put bums on seats at its new 25,000 all-seater stadium which is scheduled to open after Christmas.

Meanwhile United are facing a striker crisis ahead of tomorrow's home game with Exeter City at Brunton Park. Richie Foran and Trevor Molloy are suspended following their sendings off at Lincoln a fortnight ago. Brian Wake is pencilled in to start but he too has a slight injury problem. 17-year-old John Slaven could get a chance too. Brian Shelley is also banned and both Lee Maddison and Ryan Baldacchino are injured. Maddison could be out for up to two months with ankle ligament damage. Baldacchino has been down at Lilleshall this week and is making good progress with his pulled hamstring but it will be at least another week before he is ready for a return to action.

Nearly 30 users have sent in cheques and cash worth over £450 to date. CUFC Online is the first website to sponsor a player in United's history.
