History of the Carlisle United v Oldham Athletic fixture

The Blues prepare to welcome the Latics to Cumbria tomorrow, looking to keep up an impressive record. The Cumbrians are clearly on top against Oldham, having won 18 and lost only three of the 28 games contested.

The last time the sides met at Brunton Park was back in April 1998 with the Blues running out comfortable 3-1 winners in a Division Two (third tier) match. That was United's only victory in their last ten league games though, the result of that being relegation back to the basement of league football after just one season. Goals from Ian Stevens and Graham Anthony, with Doug Hodgson in reply for the visitors, had the Blues 2-1 up at half-time with Allan Smart making sure of all three points in the 90th minute as just 4,594 spectators looked on.

United have beaten the Latics by a three-goal margin at Brunton Park five times, the most recent of those victories though was well over 40 years ago in the 1960-61 season, a campaign served in the old Division Four. The game came on the last day of the season with Carlisle winning 3-0 thanks to goals from George Walker, Barry Brayton and George Whitelaw in front of an attendance of 4,292 people.

Oldham may have only won at the home of the Cumbrians three times but one of those victories was a thumping 5-2 win, again on the last day of the season, but this time in Division Two in the 1984-85 campaign. The score was 1-1 at half-time only for the Blues to capitulate after the break and concede four goals while only scoring one in reply, Paul Gorman and Don O'Riordan being the Cumbrians goalscorers on the day as a paltry crowd of just 2,470 spectators looked on.

Recent respective form guides

United have only performed averagely at home of late, winning three and losing two of their last six matches at Brunton Park. Only five goals have been registered in this time, with six going in at the wrong end, although four of those did come in the 4-1 defeat against Yeovil.

The Latics have had an excellent run of form away from home in the league recently, with four victories and just one loss from their last six matches on the road. Oldham have a narrow positive goal difference over these games, with eleven goals for and eight against.

Carlisle's 51 points from 35 games sees them lie inside the top half of the table, in tenth position, the Blues currently two points away from the final play-off spot and seven points behind the Latics.

Oldham's total of 58 points from their 35 games played sees them sitting in the third play-off place in the League One table, the Latics being only three points away from an automatic promotion spot.
