Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 11 April 2012 By Thetashkentterror

It's still close at the top between the two real title contenders with Preston picking up three points over the week and Burnley four. North End, a point ahead of the Clarets having played a game more but having a much better goal difference, winning 3-1 at home to Tranmere on Saturday while Burnley defeated Macclesfield 1-0 on the road, the Clarets though then surprisingly dropping two points on Easter Monday when they could only draw 1-1 at home to Morecambe.

Walsall, despite only losing one game all season, look nailed on for a third-placed finish after a comfortable 4-0 victory at Accrington Stanley while the battle for fourth spot continues apace. Carlisle thumping Port Vale 5-1 at home thanks to goals from Josh Todd (2), Pat Brough, Brad Potts and Dave Symington, while Tranmere, despite going down at Preston on Saturday still managed to pick up three points this week after they beat second-bottom Blackpool 2-1 at home on Wednesday afternoon.

That then leaves Carlisle three points ahead of Tranmere, and with a far superior goal difference with United being joint top scorers in the division on a bumper 57 goals from 22 games. Both teams still have two games left to play though and you'd have to think that the Blues will need one win, despite a couple of tough fixtures left at Shrewsbury on Friday and then Burnley the following Wednesday, to keep hold of fourth place at the end of the season with Rovers having on paper much easier games at home to Oldham and then away to Accrington Stanley.

Back to action present though and the final two games played in the divsion on Saturday morning came much lower down the table as Shrewsbury won 2-1 at Morecambe, while Rochdale tasted victory by the same scoreline, at home to Stockport. Aside from the league meanwhile Exeter defeated Millwall on penalties in the southern area final of the League Cup on Wednesday afternoon and they now take on Doncaster at home in the overall final at the start of next month, Rovers having beaten Hull City 2-0 in the northern final a fortnight ago.
