Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 10 April 2012 By Thetashkentterror

With both sides winning this weekend it looks the title race is now only between Preston and Burnley, with Walsall five points off top spot and only having three games left to play. North End on Saturday thrashing Stockport 5-1 at home, while the Clarets were another side successful on their own turf as they defeated Wrexham 3-0. Those results leaving first-placed Preston two points clear of Burnley, but the Clarets do have two matches in hand.

The Saddlers in third losing ground this week as they could only draw 3-3 at home to Carlisle on Thursday afternoon, the United goals being scored by Mark Beck with two and Brad Potts with a single strike. Carlisle then following that one point up with all three on Saturday morning as they defeated Macclesfield 3-0 at home, Dave Symington this time the young Blue bagging a brace, while Alex Salmon also found the Town net.

In the battle for fourth place Tranmere are now hot on the heels of Carlisle, Rovers three points behind and with one game in hand after beating Bury 2-1 at home. Tranmere having only actually played 19 games to United's 21, but they will play one fewer match over the course of the season as they are in the southern section of the division, that fixture list anomaly caused by Chester's demise in 2010.

Elsewhere at the weekend meanwhile the bottom two lost at home again as Blackpool went down 2-1 against Wigan and Morecambe crashed to a heavy 4-0 defeat against Port Vale. The final game played being a mid-table stalemate as Oldham drew 0-0 at home to Shrewsbury. Next weekend then sees six fixtures take place on Easter Saturday, with Carlisle in action in a 12noon kick-off versus Port Vale at Creighton Rugby Club.
