Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 18 January 2011 By Thetashkentterror
At last was what I am sure all youth team managers were crying at the weekend as they finally played their first league matches since the 20th of November, that being a bumper seven weeks since a ball was kicked in anger. Leaders Blackpool didn't make the most of the return to action though as they surprisingly went down heavily 3-0 at home to a struggling Bury side, although in fairness to the Tangerines half of their players were on the bench for their first-team in their FA Cup defeat at Southampton.

That allowed Burnley, who defeated a weakened Carlisle side 2-0 at home, to close the gap to four points at the top of the table, the Clarets goals being scored in the first-half by Ulsterman Shay McCartan and Belgian youth international Mehdi Lazaar. Burnley on Saturday leapfrogging, on their way into second, Rochdale who went down 2-1 at home in a local derby against Oldham.

Fourth-placed Port Vale, after playing ten games this season, are still the only unbeaten side in the division and they won 2-1 at home to Wigan at the weekend, while Walsall had a massive victory. The Saddlers, who knocked Carlisle out of the FA Youth Cup in December with a 2-0 win at Brunton Park, putting way more goals past Stockport as they hammered the Hatters 7-0 at home.

The final two games played, with Tranmere against Wrexham being frozen off, meanwhile saw Shrewsbury win 2-0 away to Macclesfield, and Preston defeat Accrington Stanley 3-0 at home. North End though on the road next week when they make the trip to Carlisle in the league for an 11am kick-off at Creighton Rugby Club on a wetter but warmer looking Saturday morning according to the present weather forecast.
