North End having won 2-0 at Lincoln in the opening stage of the northern area of the competition, while the young Blues received a bye in the first round. This season, Carlisle lost 1-0 at Preston on the opening day of the campaign, that being Preston's only league victory so far, while last year the Cumbrians were defeated 2-1 at home by the Lilywhites when they were drawn against them in the Youth Alliance Cup for the first time.

As for the rest of the northern section three games have yet to be played, while Oldham were easily the biggest winners as they thrashed York City 9-0 at home. Down south the competition works differently as the opening stage was split into five groups of 27 clubs, with 16 of those sides now making it through to the straight knockout rounds.
