Cumberland Cup Semi-Final Update

Workington won through in a hard-fought encounter at Borough Park yesterday, with the only goal of the game coming in the 20th minute when two ex-Carlisle players combined as Darren Edmondson got on the end of a Graham Anthony cross to head past in-form Gilly goalkeeper Martyn Clarke. Reds having numerous chances to win the tie by a bigger margin only for Clarke to perform heriocs in the visitors goal.

After defeating Harraby Catholic Club 3-1 in the last eight Carlisle United face Wetheriggs United in the semi-finals as they look to set up a final between the big two. The round date is scheduled for Saturday 31st March at 1.30pm but the rules of the competition state that a side that has floodlights at their ground must play their tie in midweek, so with Carlisle having a spare reserve team date on Tuesday 27th March, the game goes ahead at Brunton Park on that night with a kick-off time of 7.15pm.

Wetheriggs ply their trade in Division One of the Talbot Insurance Westmorland Football League, where they currently sit second in the table behind Kendal County, having won nine and lost two of their eleven league games played to date. To get to the final four the Gilwilly Recreation Ground side have won away to Longtown 3-1, defeated Silloth 3-1 at home, won 4-3 away to Windscale after extra-time and defeated Salterbeck 2-0, with Martyn Currie and Steven Hall looking likely to be the dangerman for the Castletown-based outfit having scored 16 of Riggs' 33 league goals so far.

Semi-final draw
