Greg Abbott
United caretaker boss Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday morning as he talked about the 2-1 defeat at Swansea on Friday night. Abbott first responding to Lacey's point that some supporters think that Carlisle get a 1-0 lead and rely on the defence rather than going on the attack to try to finish the game off :

" Again, I slightly disagree with that, infact I don't slightly disagree with that, I massively disagree with it. Danny Graham had a chance when he was one-on-one, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson had a chance, actually a better chance than Danny Graham, when he got round big Dennis Lawrence and from 18 yards out I expected him to hit the target.

" I think us disagreeing is going to happen now and again, we can't always agree all the time. I was really disappointed for the players to get so far down the line with a 1-0 lead and do the things we asked the players to do, and create chances at the other end when we broke. Sometimes in football you don't get what you deserve, and obviously in my opinion I felt that we deserved something out of the game.

" I watched the whole game again, the whole game on Sunday for 90 minutes just to see where we can improve and what we can do better on. The supporters are right in the fact that we need a better cutting edge, we need more quality in the final third and we need to start converting our chances. When you get through and when you get chances you have to hit the target and you have to make them pay, that probably ultimately cost us the game on Friday night.

" He (Paul Thirlwell) is not going to play on Saturday, they were hopeful that he might get into some sort of training by next week. It's not looking great at the moment but we are hopeful, he's a quick healer and we'll just have to wait and see how he is, probably after the weekend when he has had a good week for it to all settle down. "

" It's a pull, which if it can be better it's better, it doesn't take quite as long and obviously Dolly (Neil Dalton) is working day in and day out to get him right as quick as he can. With muscle injuries you have got to be very, very careful because if it goes, and it's not quite right and he plays then it's going to happen again and he'll be out for longer. So we have to treat that one with a vast amount of care.

" His ankle (Peter Murphy's) is fine, he trained very, very well yesterday, everybody that is fit is in contention for the weekend. We've only got really Ged Dalton is a longer term one and Thirlwell out so that is encouraging. We've got some younger players who are on their way up, not quite ready for the first team yet, but the squad is decent enough.

" It can cope with a few injuries but we're not a massive club, we haven't got the resources or strength in depth that other people have got. So it is vital that we don't get injuries or suspensions and keep that group together and give us a lot of players to pick from. At the moment we have got that so we have to keep our fingers crossed that that stays with it.

" Nobody wants to lose two games on the trot or three games on the trot. All we can do is prepare a team, I've got the reports on Bristol Rovers in front of me, I've got the DVD of the Bristol Rovers v Leeds game. We'll work hard all week on what we can do well and we'll work hard all week on what they can do well to try to stop that and hopefully get a result on Saturday. "

" It's not cut-and-dried, they are on a similar start to what we had last year after coming up from the league below. They'll be full of optimism and enthusiasm, they'll work their socks off I can guarantee you that. As you've seen from the Cheltenham game, and the Oldham and Tranmere games, teams are coming here to make life very, very difficult for us. That's a mark of respect for what we achieved last year.

" You have to have a gameplan everywhere you go, what we said was that tactically we'd tinker with things slightly. We need to have stability and continuity, you go to places like Nottingham Forest, Leeds or Swansea with a vast amount of good quality players, top quality players for this level. If you open up too early then they will cut you to pieces, we have to make sure that doesn't happen.

" As we did last season at Swansea, we were 3-0 down after 15-20 minutes and the game was done and dusted. I looked at the clock last year, 5-0 down with 36 minutes to go, now it certainly wasn't the case this year. Maybe we were a bit expansive and a bit more open but this season we've shut that down, we are very, very solid and we're still looking to cause teams problems when we break with that pace and quality that we know is in that side.

" There is always hope of getting people in, I'm not desperate to bring anybody in because we are waiting for the right player. The fans wouldn't thank me for bringing in players for the sake of it, I think what they want to see is players coming in that are better than we have got and that are going to improve us. You have to wait and be patient, those players aren't always around, and then it's loans so you are asking for clubs to do you a favour in letting people go at a time when everybody wants to keep their squad together. "

" They've worked hard all summer to get a squad and they want to keep that together, there aren't that many options. As the season progresses and people sign players, and they get more bodies in, or their season is not going as they feel it should be then that it is when players become more available. You have to be a little bit patient but we are always looking.

" He (Harry Worley) has come in and I had a nice chat with him yesterday, a really positive chat. He has trained as well yesterday and did very, very well, so again he'll be in contention at the weekend. He's come in and he's got a different way about him, Chelsea - Carlisle, it's a bit of a culture shock and it takes a little bit of time to find people's feet. He's doing that now and he's bedding in nicely with the players, again he'll be in the squad for Saturday's game.

" Absolutely brilliant that he (Simon Hackney) has signed a new extended deal. He's had a tough time with his injuries, he hasn't played a competitive game for near enough eight months, probably just the Coventry game. We've got to look to get Simon back to where he was, it takes time, at the moment the games are really tough and they are really fast and furious.

" He's pushing now and we want him to have a couple more reserve games to really push the question. We always know that if we are in bother at home, and we need somebody with that little bit of attacking flair and that little bit of something different, that Simon can come on. That might be the right way to bed him in and get him through to the first-team, but the quicker the better for me. "
