Reported Leeds and Wolves target Liam McCarron set for imminent departure

Championship rivals Leeds United and Derby County are reportedly battling Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Carlisle winger.

Carlisle United manager Steven Pressley has confirmed to the News and Star that young winger Liam McCarron is set for an imminent move away from the club with Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers linked.

The young winger forced his way into Carlisle’s first team last season and now looks set to leave Brunton Park after just 16 League Two games.

The Mail reported earlier this month that Leeds were prepared to offer £250,000 in an attempt to fight off competition from Championship rivals Derby County and Premier League high-flyers Wolves.

And, while refusing to drop hints about McCarron’s destination, Pressley has admitted that the forward could have a brand new club in the coming days.

“The club are in quite progressed talks with several clubs. I believe it is quite far down the line and something might happen quite imminently,” he said.

“That’s something the board and [director of football] David Holdsworth have been discussing. One thing I’ll stress is that the club won’t sell unless the right bids come in.

“But it is an opportunity he [McCarron] probably doesn’t want to turn down.”

At the time, Leeds appeared to be the most likely destination for McCarron but it remains to be seen if either Wolves or Derby are willing to pay more than £250,000 for a player still unproven at senior level.

Whites coach Marcelo Bielsa has a real knack of turning young talent into established stars, however. Then again, so does Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
