Foran: Preston target
First Division Preston North End are tracking United striker Richie Foran - and manager Roddy Collins may be forced to sell because of falling attendances.

The Lancashire club had a scout at Saturday's match watching Foran score as the Cumbrians beat Boston 4-2. But Collins says no firm offers have been received, even though he admitted on Saturday that his best players were available. He denied reports in the Irish press that Coventry City were in the market for Foran.

Foran's fellow Irishman Trevor Molloy has been sent back home to Ireland in disgrace following an allegation of late night drinking. Molloy was dropped for the Boston game and is reported to have re-signed for Bohemians, the club he left in the summer. Meanwhile there has been speculation that former captain Stuart Whitehead could be on his way to Darlington with striker Barry Conlon coming to Carlisle in part-exchange.

"No club has come in for Richie Foran. We had a couple of tentative enquiries from people associated with clubs. There has been no approach from any manager, director or official. He will have to start playing consistently for any club to come in," said Collins.

Rumours suggest the administrators still in charge at Brunton Park could be responsible for the moves to start selling players. At the start of the season creditors approved a CVA (Company Voluntary Arrangement) that predicted gates of 3,000. It said up to £200,000 of transfer income would have to be realised by January if the club were to meet its obligations under the terms of the agreement. In the event, the average home gate after the John Courtenay takeover is over 6,000 but with the Boston gate only 3,623 there is a possibility players may still have to be sold.

Hopper signs in for Reds

Tony Hopper has further swelled the number of ex-United players at Borough Park by signing for Workington Reds.

The Harraby-born midfielder had been with Barrow at the start of this season but has opted to sign a deal with Tommy Cassidy's team who are in the Unibond League First Division.

He joins ex-Carlisle men Richard Prokas and Will Varty in the squad for tonight's clash with Spennymoor United. Former United trainees Lee Hoolickin and Craig Lewis are also in the squad.
