Preece: Staying put
United boss Paul Simpson is seeing the pieces fall into his close season jigsaw with the news that Andy Preece is set to sign for another season and winger Brendan McGill has turned down a £50,000 move to Gretna.

The squad currently stands at 21 players but Simpson would like to off-load Darren Kelly, Mark Summerbell and Michael Jack, who do not figure in his first-team plans. He has signed the Oldham teenager Carlos Roca so far and has made enquiries about Leigh RMI and former Oldham striker David McNiven. With Leigh being allowed back into the Conference for next season, McNiven might be harder to tempt away. Northwich Victoria also received a reprieve this week when Telford folded following the failure to come up with a rescue plan.

Preece has indicated he will stay with United despite having one interview for the vacant Blackpool manager's job. Ex-Scottish international Colin Hendry was installed as favourite to land the hotseat at Bloomfield Road after Simpson himself turned down the chance to apply for it. McGill was offered an attractive deal at Raydale Park that would have seem re-united with former teammates Mark Birch, Ryan Baldacchino and Lee Maddison. However he decided to stay with United for a fourth season.

Meanwhile, the pre-season friendly programme is being finalised. Already the Cumbrians have firmed up dates for matches at Kendal on July 10 and Lancaster on July 31. They are taking part in the Isle of Man football festival which takes place between July 18-24 and are hoping to play a Premiership club at home on the final weekend of the pre-season on August 7.

The new Conference season kicks off on August 14. United officials are travelling down to Eastbourne next week to attend the Conference's AGM. The club have still to formally resign from the Football League and be admitted to the Conference but that process should be complete next week. Darlington's rescue from administration last week confirmed their place in the League for next season, taking away Carlisle's last hope of survival. Although Bradford and Wimbledon could still go under, League rules state United would not be given a reprieve in such circumstances.

The club say they have sold over 1,200 season tickets by close of business on Friday. The last chance to get tickets at the special early bird discount prices is on Tuesday. Last season the club sold approximately 1,400.
