Carlisle United are delighted to announce that experienced defender Byron Webster has become our sixth summer signing as he joins the Blues on a one-year deal (with a review).
Webster, 32, started his football journey with York City where he made a total of 22 appearances. He joined Doncaster Rovers in August 2009 and had loan spells with Hereford United and Northampton Town whilst at the Keepmoat.
A move to FK Banik Most saw him spend two years in Europe prior to his spell with Doncaster.
United boss Steven Pressley said: “I think in key areas of the pitch you require players with a degree of experience and knowledge. Byron certainly ticks those boxes.
“He’s a hugely imposing figure and he knows what it’s like to be promoted, having achieved that from League One to the Championship. He’s a leader, a great character and he’s actually a very good football player as well.
“He’ll be a great influence on our younger players and the leadership qualities he has will naturally shine through, as they tend to do with players of that kind.
“For a central defender, the age of 32 can almost be the peak of your career and that means we’re getting him at a very good time.
“He’s a dominant centre back but I do think his size leads to him being underestimated in terms of his football ability. He’s very assured on the ball and composed in possession. He’s an excellent signing for us and I’m delighted that we’ve got him over the line.”
Webster made the move to Sixfields a permanent one in the summer of 2011, but it was the move to Yeovil one-year later which really set his career on fire. Just under 100 solid appearances for the Glovers alerted Millwall, and he went on to spend four-and-a-half five years at the Den.
That included a three-month loan spell back at Huish Park in January 2015. His most recent move was a half-season stay with Scunthorpe United between January and May this year, where he made nine appearances for the Iron.
This deal remains subject to the clearance of all paperwork.
