Roddy Collins is ready to gamble on 21-year-old Manchester United striker Daniel Nardiello in a bid to lift the Cumbrians' faltering start to the season.

After losing 3-0 at league new boys Yeovil yesterday the manager came in for withering criticism from disgruntled fans who had battled through holiday traffic jams to get to the game. Carlisle have lost all three of their opening fixtures and lie 23rd in Division 3 just above crisis club Darlington on goal difference.

Nardiello, who has appeared just three times for the Old Trafford giants would be available for a season's long loan but Collins may choose to give him a couple of months to prove himself first. Nardiello is believed to be thinking over the move and was still considering it over the weekend. The manager was due to meet him this week to try and finalise it.

United's shot-shy attack have managed just two goals in three games and only Craig Russell from the strikers has managed to hit the target. Nardiello comes with a sound pedigree as his father was Donato Nardiello who appeared as a winger for Coventry in the late 70s and won international caps for Wales.

Alex Ferguson has a policy of farming out his young players to lower division clubs and United have benefited from this in the past, signing Ronnie Wallwork, now with West Brom, on two months loan back in the 1997-98 season.

Collins said: "It's common knowledge I'm looking for a proven goalscorer who can guarantee goals. We have to get players in. People see how well we play when we have got the ball. Goals change the game. We have to get players in if I'm going to progress the club in the way we said we would progress the club. Brian Wake can do it but he's not a proven scorer. Steve Livingstone is a major part of the plan and we need to get someone putting chances away."

The manager also admitted his defence had let him down after conceding seven goals in the first three fixtures.

"Last year we built a defence with Darren Kelly and Paul Raven that was rock-solid. At the moment we have got to start to tighten up", he said.
