Simmo: Training with Cumbrians
United are hoping to tie up a deal with Carlisle-born midfielder Paul Simpson before the start of the season.

Experienced campaigner Simpson, who spent five years with Manchester City at the start of his 20-year career, was player-manager of Rochdale last season but resigned after a disappointing end to the campaign.

He has been unable to find a club in the meantime and is now training with the Cumbrians as talks go on with Roddy Collins to try and secure a future for the veteran star at Brunton Park. It is not known whether Simpson would also be involved with the coaching side of the club but it seems highly likely considering his age and ambitions.

After leaving Maine Road in 1988 after 152 appearances and 24 goals, Simpson moved on to Oxford United in a £200,000 move. He was on the move again in 1993, joining Derby County for £500,000. After leaving Pride Park in 1997 he switched to Wolves and then Blackpool. Rochdale signed him in March 2002.

Simpson scored in the 2-0 Dale win at Carlisle in September last year. The Lancashire side enjoyed a stretch near the top of the division and promotion looked likely following their play-off campaign of the previous season. But they lost form badly after Christmas and a section of the Rochdale support wanted Simpson out.

Roddy Collins however is much more enthusiastic about his potential new recruit.

"He had a great record from set-pieces even as player-manager, which is very stressful. He is an excellent organiser on the pitch and can play on both sides. This could be a runner. We will sit down and have a chat," he said.

If he signs, Simpson will become the third permanent signing of the summer following Chris Billy and Steve Livingstone into Brunton Park. Ex-Celtic star Paul Byrne is currently on trial and impressed during the five-match tour of Ireland last week.

Meanwhile, recently returned left back Dessie Byrne could be out for 10 weeks following an injury collected in training. The Irishman has damaged ankle ligaments. He had to miss the tour of Ireland and will almost certainly be out of the opening game against York City on August 9.

The Cumbrians drew 0-0 at Barrow in their latest friendly last night. They take on Kilmarnock tomorrow at Brunton Park, kick off 3pm. Paddock and West Stand only are open to home supporters. Tickets must be bought at portakabins as per last season's arrangement. Admission is £5 for Adults and £2 for Concessions.
