Green in United's sights

Green: Ready to move after Hull bust-up?
Stuart Green could sign for United after all - following an alleged dressing room dispute at his current club Hull City. The 21-year-old midfield star was seen at Brunton Park on Saturday when he attended the Blues-Kiddy clash and reportedly held talks with manager Roddy Collins after the game.

The West Cumbrian youngster, who began his career at Newcastle United, signed for Hull on Boxing Day after starting the season on a long term loan deal. He spent three months at Brunton Park last season and Collins attempted to tie up a deal with the Magpies.

But it all turned sour for the Cumbrians when Green agreed to join the Tigers. An angry Collins told a fans forum last month that Green had already indicated through his agent that he was ready to sign for Carlisle instead. Now it seems Green is available for transfer but United must take over his contract from Hull and that includes the sell-on clause agreed between the Humbersiders and Newcastle.

City manager Peter Taylor said today that Green was indeed up for sale, but the price had to be right.

"If Stuart Green wants to go to Carlisle, he can. But they have got to match our valuation. They have got to pay what we agreed with Newcastle. If they think they can get him on the cheap, they can forget it," he said.

It was clear that Green had travelled to the Carlisle game without Taylor's permission and it seems his brief stay in Hull could be over after less than two months as a permanent signing. Ironically one of Green's best displays of the season came against United back in September when he was man of the match in City's 4-0 win. It is now open to doubt as to whose colours he might be wearing when the return fixture takes place at Brunton Park in just under three weeks time.

United are able to sign Green even though the transfer window closed on January 31. It only applies to players with Premiership clubs or those playing overseas. Green has now left the Premiership so he is able to make an immediate move north if the two clubs can agree terms and the player's personal demands are met.

It is well known in Carlisle that Collins has coveted Green's services for a long time. Despite his disappointment at the player's alleged back-tracking over Christmas, he would still jump at the chance to bring him to the club and pair him with his other midfield ace in Mark Hudson. Hudson has yet to sign permanently for United but is almost certain to be offered terms by the club soon.
