Matty Glennon: Back at Brunton Park
Goalkeeper Matty Glennon, who did so much to help United stay in the league two seasons ago, is back at Brunton Park.

He was expected to sign a three-year contract at the club today after travelling up from Hull, whom he joined in the summer of 2001 after the Cumbrians then board of Mark Knighton and Andrea Whittaker refused to release the cash to sign him from Bolton Wanderers. Now Roddy Collins has swooped to land the 24-year-old stopper on a free transfer.

Collins hopes the recapture of Glennon will help to turn around a defence that has conceded 25 goals in its last ten games, nine of which have been lost. Glennon has an enviable record at Brunton Park, having gone SEVEN consecutive games without conceding a goal in front of the Carlisle supporters, the last of those as a Hull player in the early weeks of last season. The last team to score against Glennon at Brunton Park were Cheltenham Town in March 2001.

"It's great to be back," said Glennon. "I didn't have to be talked into this. I am really pleased to be back. I have not been enjoying it at Hull very much lately and I just wanted to start enjoying my football again. Roddy's enthusiasm is great and he told me about a few signings he wants to make. I don't think it is a bad team in the first place so with a few extra players it could really be good."

Glennon could go straight into the team to play at Macclesfield tomorrow but first he faces a fitness test. His last appearance for Hull was against Macclesfield when the Tigers lost 3-1 at Boothferry Park. The result came just three days after City had demolished Carlisle 4-0 with the help of a Gary Alexander hat-trick. Collins has enquired about Alexander but he is thought to be very much in new manager Peter Taylor's plans and is likely to be staying with the Tigers. However he would still love to make a bid for City's on-loan midfielder Stuart Green, who had a loan spell with Carlisle last season. Newcastle have said he is not for sale but Collins may be able to persuade them to change their mind once the transfer window opens again in January.

The Cumbrians face a defensive crisis after centre back Lee Andrews and left back Lee Maddison collected injuries during the friendly against Manchester City's youth side on Wednesday. Maddison was ready to return to first team action but will now definitely miss tomorrow's match at the Moss Rose. Andrews could be sidelined for up to eight weeks with an ankle injury. The news means under-fire Michael Taylor, who was a target for boo-boys at Brunton Park last week is likely to keep his place and could extend his loan stay from Blackburn Rovers. Darren Kelly will partner him at Macclesfield as he has in the last three games.

Town are coming off two straight wins and expect to field David Eaton, who scored on his debut last week at Kidderminster just two minutes after coming on as a substitute. Midfielder Michael Welch is suspended. Bermudan international Kyle Lightbourne and Danny Whittaker are expected to continue up front.

Paul Bell appointed general manager

Carlisle-born Paul Bell, whose previous job was as a journalist with Sky Sports, has joined the backroom staff at Brunton Park and will take on the role of General Manager, which includes managing the commercial side of the club.

The 38-year-old is the first appointment of John Courtenay's since administrators stepped aside earlier this week. It is known that there will be more arrivals in the next few weeks as Courtenay plans a root and branch overhaul of the club that has been in disarray for years.

Bell is backing the Irish businessman to turn things around at Brunton Park.

"With John Courtenay's financial and business commitment and Roddy's expertise on the field, plus the undoubted support there is, I don't see how we can fail at Brunton Park," he said.

Summerbell player of the month

Midfielder Mark Summerbell has been voted the club's player of the month for September.

The former Middlesborough star joined the Cumbrians early in the season on a free transfer. A series of consistent performances were rewarded with the votes of the supporters in the poll, organised by CCUIST and the News & Star.

Summerbell received his prize at a dinner held in the city's Lakes Court Hotel. Winning supporter was Bob Lindsay of Carlisle.
