Conference Round-up: April 23

Last updated : 24 April 2005 By Al Woodcock
Stevenage Borough were the big winners on the final day of the Conference season.

The Borough marched into the play-offs after seeing off bottom side Leigh RMI 2-0 at Broadhall Way and edging ahead of Morecambe in the process. The Shrimpers drew 0-0 at Tamworth to finish the season on 71 points but slipped a point behind Stevenage and missed out on the post-season action.

Anthony Elding needed just six minutes to grab his 20th Conference goal of the season and put the Borough ahead but the home team failed to put the game away thereafter and had to endure an anxious afternoon listening for news from Tamworth. With seconds left Darryn Stamp added a second goal to make the points safe, and 3,516 celebrated a play-off place.

Morecambe's goalless stalemate at the Lambs was as much down to Tamworth keeper Ryan Price as anyone. Price's heroics kept the visitors out and Morecambe, who reached the play-offs two years ago, missed out on another chance at reaching the Football League for the first time, despite an impressive nine-game unbeaten run to finish the season. The home side also put together a very impressive finish with 11 games undefeated.

Aldershot Town ensured they will play in the play-offs for the second successive season after defeating Scarborough 2-0 at the Recreation Ground. Tony Sills, the Shots top scorer was the hero for Terry Brown's side with both the goals. The win means they will now face Carlisle over two legs in the play-off semi-finals.

Champions Barnet spluttered to a 2-0 defeat at Dagenham & Redbridge to end the season on a sour note. Craig Mackail-Smith and Glenn Southam enabled the Daggers to go out with a bang as they claimed 11th spot in the final table.

Exeter's play-off hopes ended at Carlisle despite an impressive 2-0 success. The Grecians moved ahead early in the second half at Brunton Park thanks to veteran Steve Flack's header. Lee Phillips nodded another 11 minutes later but the victory wasn't enough to propel Exeter into the post-season games.

The blinds were also brought down on Woking's remaining hopes when they crashed 3-1 at Halifax. The Shaymen were always in control with Jason Blunt putting them ahead after 63 minutes and two Ryan Sugden strikes making the game safe. Justin Richards pulled one back in the final minute for the Cards.

York City had something to cheer on the final day as they thrashed relegated Farnborough 4-0 at the Kit Kat Crescent in front of 2,055. Boss Billy McEwen promised sweeping changes in the summer after the Minstermen's disappointing campaign saw them finish in 17th place. Andy Bishop, Bryan Stewart, Lev Yalcin and Paul D Robinson were the scorers for the side who were top of Division 3 in the early weeks of last season.

Northwich are still sweating over a Conference ruling on the state of their new stadium but they finished the campaign on the field with a fine 1-0 win over Crawley Town. Jonny Allan scored the only goal. Conference chief John Moules said this week that certain guarantees from the Cheshire club had not been forthcoming and they have a deadline of May 31 to ensure the new Victoria Stadium fulfills minimum requirements for the Conference. The club are also still in administration despite promising to be out of it by January.

If the Vics are booted out, there could yet be a reprieve for Forest Green who ended their season with a 2-2 draw at home to Canvey Island. Damon Searle and Andy Harris were on target for Rovers, with Jeff Minton and Mario Noto replying for the visitors. Manager Alan Lewer though will not be around next season wherever Forest Green end up. He was relieved of his duties after failing to achieve the necessary results at the Gloucestershire club.
