History of the Carlisle United v Swindon Town fixture

Carlisle play host to Swindon tomorrow evening holding the advantage on previous meetings between the two sides. Of the 15 games played at Brunton Park the Cumbrians have won seven times while Town have been victorious twice.

The last time the two teams met in Carlisle was more than a decade ago, in August 1995, with Swindon narrowly winning 1-0 in a Division Two (third tier) encounter. Edwin Murray scored the only goal of the game for the visitors, in front of 6,325 spectators, in a season that ended with both sides leaving the division through opposite ends of the table.

United's biggest win at home to the Robins came in the old Division Two promotion campaign of 1973-74 when Carlisle thumped Town 5-1 at Brunton Park. Frank Clarke hammered home four goals, one from the penalty spot, while Joe Laidlaw scored the other as 6,544 fans looked on, Dave Syrett netting a consolation goal for the visitors.

As already mentioned Swindon have only won twice at Brunton Park in fifteen attempts, those being the last two games between the sides in Cumbria, and both of them coming in promotion campaigns for the Wiltshire outfit. The most recent has already been detailed above while the victory for the Robins before that came in the old Third Division in 1986-87. United crashing to a 3-0 defeat, amazingly in front of only 2,082 spectators, the Town goals coming from Tim Parkin, Bryan Wade and a Mark Jones penalty.
