Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Stevenage fixture

Carlisle welcome Stevenage to Cumbria tomorrow hoping to improve on a record of one win and two losses against the Hertfordshire outfit, then known as Stevenage Borough, during the only season the two sides faced each other in, that being in the Nationwide Conference campaign of 2004-05. The Blues losing both regular league fixtures before going on to a famous victory in the match that really mattered, the play-off final at Stoke's Britannia Stadium.

It wasn't until late February that the two teams met, the first fixture coming at Brunton Park on a snowy Tuesday night in front of only 3,146 spectators. Carlisle finding themselves 2-0 down at the break as Darryn Stamp remarkably netted twice for the visitors in just two minutes around the 36 minute mark. United's 80th minute penalty from Chris Lumsdon therefore proving to be nothing more than a consolation goal for the Blues in the 2-1 defeat.

The sides then met again only a week and a half later at what was then Broadhall Way, and is now the Lamex Stadium. United this time going 1-0 up thanks to an excellent 20th minute free-kick from Peter Murphy as 2,217 fans looked on. It all went wrong for the Cumbrians, and in particular young goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, in the last five minutes of the match though as the Boro nicked another 2-1 victory when George Boyd levelled in the 85th minute and then Jon Brady fired in an injury time winner.

At the end of the season, with Carlisle finishing third in the table and Stevenage fifth, and after respective semi-final victories over Aldershot Town and Exeter City, United did get the last laugh though as they were promoted back into the Football League following a 1-0 play-off final win in front of 13,422 specators at the Britannia Stadium. The Blues forced to hang on grimly in the second half to a 23rd minute Peter Murphy header to claim the all important victory.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle's woeful home form means they have chalked up just a single victory, with five defeats, from their last six matches at Brunton Park. While the Cumbrians have scored just four goals, a worringly large 12 have been leaked at the other end. Stevenage's away form is relativey average meanwhile, with two wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last six games on the road, six goals having been both scored and conceded in this period.

Carlisle see themselves just below half-way in the npower League One table, in 13th place, showing a record of 13 points gained from their nine games played so far. Stevenage however also have 13 points from 9 games but their superior goal difference to United sees them lie narrowly inside the top half of the table, in 12th position.
