History of the Southend United v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle travel to Essex this weekend, hoping to improve on a useful return from this fixture. Of the 16 games played the Cumbrians have recorded four wins and drawn five times, while Southend have come away with seven victories.

Last season in League One Southend easily defeated Carlisle 3-0 in mid-March in front of 7,789 spectators. Peter Clarke putting the Shrimpers 1-0 up after 14 minutes before further second-half goals from Damian Scannell and Alan McCormack ensured an easy three points for the home side.

That game was Southend's biggest ever victory at home to the Cumbrians, while of the four wins for Carlisle at Roots Hall the best came in the FA Cup third round in the 1970-71 season as the Blues won 3-0, with a bumper 16,729 fans looking on, thanks to a Bob Hatton brace and a single goal from Bobby Owen.

Recent respective form guides

Southend will be hoping to improve on their poor home form, collecting just four draws from their last six contests at Roots Hall. The Shrimpers have scored six goals in these games, but have also conceded an alarming eight.

Carlisle's away form is none too clever either though, seeing them win just one and draw only two of their last six matches on the road. While the Cumbrians have scored six goals, a hefty eleven have hit the back of the wrong net.

Southend are stuck down in the relegation zone of League One, in 22nd, with a return of just 33 points from their 35 games played thus far. Meanwhile Carlisle's 47 points from their 37 games contested to date sees them lie just inside the top half of the table, in 11th place.
