History of the Carlisle United v Southend United fixture

Carlisle welcome the Shrimpers tomorrow, looking to continue an impressive record. The Cumbrians clearly on top, having won nine and lost only three of the 15 games between the two sides at Brunton Park over the years.

In League One in September 2008 Carlisle defeated Southend 2-1 at Brunton Park, United coming from a Dougie Freedman goal down to win in front of 6,561 spectators. Danny Graham from the penalty spot and Cleveland Taylor on 64 and 79 minutes completing the Cumbrians comeback.

Two seasons ago in League One United lost out to a last-minute Lee Barnard winner for the visitors in late April as both teams pushed for promotion. Southend opening the scoring in the seventh minute through Charlie Mulgrew before Simon Hackney equalised for the Cumbrians on 52 minutes.

David Raven's harsh sending-off midway through the second-half incensed a lot of the 9,122 supporters though and meant that the visitors finished the game on top. That 2-1 final scoreline being the same result Southend have achieved in three victories at Brunton Park over the years.

Carlisle's biggest win at home to Southend was a thumping 5-0 victory at the same level we find ourselves at now, back in the 1997-98 campaign. The goals that early January afternoon, as 5,389 fans looked on, coming from Matt Jansen (2), Nicky Wright, Ian Stevens and Manchester United-loanee Ronnie Wallwork. That game coming only four days after the Blues had hammered Rochdale 6-1 at home in a Football League Trophy tie.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle have managed to pick up just two wins from their last six home games, losing three and drawing the other one. A generous nine goals have been both scored and conceded in this period.

Southend meanwhile have an at best average recent record on the road, winning two of their last six matches away from Roots Hall, but losing the other four. While the Shrimpers have hit eight goals, a hefty 11 have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle, in 21st, are stuck down in the relegation zone of League One with a return of just 11 points from their 13 games played thus far. Southend's 17 points earned from 13 games contested sees them lie inside the top half of the table though, in tenth position.
