Footymad preview History of the Preston North End v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle travel to Preston take on North End at Deepdale tomorrow evening, having over the years having had a very marginally better record at the ground than their hosts in games between the two sides. The Blues over 17 matches at Deepdale winning seven, losing seven and drawing three, while scoring 22 goals and conceding only 20 in the process.

Last season in League One the two sides drew 3-3 in an entertaining Boxing Day clash at Deepdale as 17,518 fans looked on. Lee Miller putting Carlisle 1-0 up from the penalty spot on 20 minutes before Iain Hume levelled just two minutes later for the home side, with Paul Parry then making it 2-1 to North End just after the half-hour mark with another spot-kick.

After Rory Loy's serious injury Francois Zoko then equalised for United to make it 2-2 in first-half stoppage time, before in a seesaw encounter it was 3-2 to Carlisle through James Berrett with 62 minutes on the clock. The Blues not able to hang on to all three points though as Preston made the final scoreline 3-3 two mintues into stpppage time as Danny Mayor bundled the ball home.

The last time the teams met in Lancashire before that was almost 15 years ago in February 1998, as the Cumbrians ran out cosy 3-0 winners in a Division Two (third tier) match in front of 8,985 spectators. Carlisle already 2-0 up after 26 minutes thanks to goals from Billy Barr and Nick Wright before Wright scored his second goal of the match with 62 minutes on the clock.

That game, along with another 3-0 victory in 1993-94 in what for many years was the old Division Four is United's largest win at Deepdale. That late April afternoon on the Preston plastic pitch seeing the Blues goals scored by Ian Arnold with a brace and David Reeves as 11,363 fans looked on.

As for Preston, well their biggest victory against the Blues at Deepdale came way back in the old Second Division in 1971-72 courtesy of a 3-0 win. The North End goals that October 1971 afternoon scored by George Lyall with 2 and Gerry Ingram in front of 15,430 spectators.
