Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Oldham Athletic fixture

Carlisle welcome Oldham to Cumbria tonight looking to continue an impressive record against the Latics at Brunton Park. The Blues well on top, winning 21, drawing eleven and losing only four of the 36 games played between the sides.

Last season in League One saw United produce a stirring comeback from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with the Latics, Shefki Kuqi with goals on 22 and 38, his first of those coming from the penalty spot, and Tom Adeyemi putting the visitors in the clear before Lee Miller pulled a goal back for Carlisle in first-half stoppage time. Francois Zoko then, as 4,803 fans looked on, netting in the 48th minute and then second-half stoppage time to earn the Cumbrians a point.

In the 2010-11 campaign in League One the two teams fought out a slightly less but still entertaining 2-2 draw in Cumbria in late January, the Latics, in front of 5,389 spectators, racing into a 2-0 first-half lead through Aidan White and Chris Taylor, only for United to fight back in the last 15 minutes to nick a point thanks to a Francois Zoko strike in the 75th minute then a James Berrett penalty deep into stoppage time.

One of the defeats for the Cumbrians came in 2009-10 though as they lost 2-1 in mid-April with all the goals being scored in a 14 minute second-half period as 4,484 fans looked on. Lewis Guy and Dale Stephens giving the Latics a 2-0 lead with strikes on 55 and 64 minutes, before Gary Madine netted with what would prove to be only a consolation goal five minutes later.

Early in the 2008-09 campaign Carlisle defeated Oldham 1-0 at home in the first round of the Carling Cup. Scott Dobie, just as the game looked to be heading for extra-time, scoring the only goal of the tie in the 89th minute in front of just 2,509 spectators at Brunton Park.

In 2008-09 in the league in Cumbria, the Latics and the Blues drew 1-1 in April 2009. Carlisle taking the lead through a Michael Bridges penalty just before the break, with Oldham's Daniel Jones being sent off for a professional foul in the process. Being down to ten men not ending the Latics hopes on the day though as they grabbed a point a minute from time when Neal Eardley equalised with a long range free-kick.

United have beaten the Latics by a three-goal margin at Brunton Park five times, the most recent of those victories though was well over 40 years ago in the 1960-61 season, a campaign served in the old Division Four. The game came on the last day of the season with Carlisle winning 3-0 thanks to goals from George Walker, Barry Brayton and George Whitelaw in front of an attendance of 4,292 people.

Oldham may have only won at the home of the Cumbrians four times but one of those victories was a thumping 5-2 win, again on the last day of the season, but this time in Division Two in the 1984-85 campaign. The score was 1-1 at half-time only for the Blues to capitulate after the break and concede four goals while only scoring one in reply, Paul Gorman and Don O'Riordan being the Cumbrians goalscorers on the day as a paltry crowd of just 2,470 spectators looked on.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle need to improve on their recent home record of just three draws and three losses from their previous six matches at Brunton Park. The Cumbrians have conceded a hefty 12 goals in this period, and managed to convert only three of their own chances. Oldham's away form meanwhile is just on the bad side of average picking up two good wins and a draw, but losing three from their last six games on the road. Only five goals have been registered in this time, with six leaked at the wrong end.

Carlisle find themselves struggling down in 17th position in the league at the moment having picked up 16 points from their 13 matches contested to date. Oldham on the other hand have the same amount of points from just 12 games, but their ten goal better goal difference sees them currently sitting in 13th place in the League One table.

FootyMad's prediction ...

Nothing seems to be going right for the Cumbrians at home recently, and the Footymad panel can see no immediate turn around in fortunes as the Latics come away with an easy victory...... Away win
