History of the Carlisle United v Nottingham Forest fixture

The Blues prepare to welcome the Tricky Trees to Cumbria on Wednesday night, and hold the advantage on previous meetings between the two sides. Of the only five games played at Brunton Park, United have claimed two wins, while Forest have come away with one victory, the two other matches thus ending in draws.

The last time the teams met in Carlisle was way back in March 1977, when the two sides shared the spoils courtesy of a 1-1 final scoreline in a game played in the old Second Division. Dennis Martin scored United's second-half goal in front of 7,603 spectators in a season that would eventually see the Blues relegated at the end of the campaign.

Carlisle have won both their home games against Forest 2-1, the first coming in the 1969-70 season in an FA Cup third round replay (scorers - Thomas Murray and George McVitie, attendance - 12,840), while the second victory happened in United's 1973-74 Division Two promotion campaign (scorers - Bobby Owen and Joe Laidlaw, attendance - 9,258). Meanwhile the Tricky Trees's win at Brunton Park came in the 1972-73 season as they themselves won 2-1 in the old Division Two (Carlisle scorer - Bobby Owen, attendance - 7,626).

Recent respective form guides

United have only performed averagely at home lately, winning three and losing two of the last six matches at Brunton Park, seven goals have been both scored and conceded in this period.

Forest's away form is pretty dire at the moment, accumulating just one victory and two draws from their last six league games played on the road. While the Tricky Trees have only scored five goals, a generous twelve have hit the back of the wrong net.

United's 40 points from 29 games sees them lie inside the top half of the table, in tenth position, seven points short of the play-off spots and twelve points above the relegation zone.

Forest are just outside the automatic promotion places, on goal difference behind Bristol City, in third, having taken 52 points from 28 games. The Tricky Trees are currently three points behind surprise leaders Scunthorpe but they do have two games in hand.

FootyMad's prediction ...

Neither of the two sides are showing much worthwhile form at present, so the Madmen can see no more than a single point for the Cumbrians. Score draw
