History of the Millwall v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle face a trip to Bermondsey tomorow afternoon having come away from there with little in previous meetings, a total of 16 defeats from 22 games played at the Den telling its own tale.

Last season in this fixture the Cumbrians lost 1-0 to Millwall as Leeds-loanee Tresor Kandol pounced in the last minute to break Carlisle hearts as 6,828 fans watched on, the Blues themselves having no on target goal attempts during the 90 minutes.

Meanwhile two seasons ago in League One United pretty much blew their chances of automatic promotion by going down 3-0 at Millwall in the penultimate game of the regular campaign in front of 10,075 spectators. Danny Livesey adding to Carlisle's misery that day when he was sent off in the 56th minute for a professional foul on Neil Harris.

Millwall's biggest margin of victory over the Blues has three times come courtesy of that 3-0 scoreline including that match, the first victory taking place in 1961-62 in Division Four (attendance - 11,421) and the second happening in 1980-81 in the old Division Three (attendance - 3,168).

United's two meagre victories at the Den in 22 attempts have both coincided with promotion campaigns. The first being in 1973-74 when the Blues won 2-1 thanks to a goal from Bill Green and a Millwall own goal (attendance - 8,907), the Cumbrians eventually finishing third in Division Two as they were promoted to the top tier for the first, and only time, in their history.

The second win happened in the 1981-82 Division Three campaign, a season that would see the Blues finish runners-up to champions Burnley on goal difference after both sides had finished level at the top on 80 points each. United once more won 2-1 that December Saturday courtesy of a brace from Paul Bannon in front of a crowd of 4,740 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Millwall have an excellent home record at the New Den in recent times, winning five and losing just one of their last six games. These high-scoring matches have yielded a total of 12 goals for Millwall, with only three goals against.

Carlisle had an at best average record on the road last season, collecting one win and three draws from their last six competitive games played away from Brunton Park. While the Cumbrians have hit six goals in those matches, nine have hit the back of the wrong net.

Millwall's first league game of the current season saw them drew 1-1 in a televised lunchtime game at Southampton, their equaliser coming from the head of Nadjim Abdou in the 65th minute. Carlisle meanwhile had an extremely disappointing opening day as they lost 3-1 at home to Brentford, the United goal being scored by Ian Harte from the penalty spot.
