History of the Millwall v Carlisle United fixture

The Cumbrians visit South London and the New Den tomorrow afternoon, facing the despressing statistic that they have been beaten in 14 of the 20 games they have played away to Millwall over the years.

Last season in League One United were defeated away to the Lions again, this time 2-0 in front of 10,415 spectators. Neil Harris bagging a brace with two second-half goals to make sure of all three points for the home side.

Millwall's biggest margin of victory over the Blues has twice come courtesy of a 3-0 scoreline, the first victory taking place in 1961-62 in Division Four (attendance - 11,421) and the second happening in 1980-81 in the old Division Three (attendance - 3,168).

United's two victories at the Den in 20 attempts have both coincided with promotion campaigns. The first being in 1973-74 when the Blues won 2-1 thanks to a goal from Bill Green and a Millwall own goal (attendance - 8,907), the Cumbrians eventually finishing third in Division Two as they were promoted to the top tier for the first, and only time, in their history.

The second win happened in the 1981-82 Division Three campaign, a season that would see the Blues finish runners-up to champions Burnley on goal difference after both sides had finished level at the top on 80 points each. United once more won 2-1 that December Saturday courtesy of a brace from Paul Bannon in front of a crowd of 4,740 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Millwall's poor home run has seen them win just one and draw two of their last six matches at the New Den. Only four goals have been registered in this run of games, but just five have gone in at the wrong end as well.

Carlisle's away form is a little bit better, with three victories and just one loss from their last six outings on the road. The games have constituted a decent return of nine goals for the Cumbrians, and six goals against, three of those conceded coming in a 3-2 defeat at Leeds.

Millwall are hovering perilously just above the relegation zone, in 19th, with 49 points from 44 matches. Carlisle meawhile are currently holding the final automatic promotion place in the League One table, and have accumulated 79 points from the 44 games they have played so far.
