History of the Leyton Orient v Carlisle United fixture

The Blues face a trip to London this weekend, needing to change their fortunes in the nation's capital. United hoping to improve on a record which has seen them lose ten and win only two of the 18 games played at the home of the O's.

Last season in League One the two sides fought out a 1-1 draw at the Matchroom Stadium in mid-February in front of 4,449 spectators. Joe Garner giving Carlisle the lead after 15 minutes only for Orient left-back Matt Lockwood to equalise for the home side two minutes after the interval.

The biggest win for the O's on home soil against the Blues came in the 1987-88 season when they defeated Carlisle 4-1 in the old Fourth Division. United's only goal that day, at what was then Brisbane Road, was scored by Bobby Hutchinson in front of 2,861 fans in a terrible campaign that only saw the Cumbrians saved from relegation to the GM Vauxhall Conference by the financial demise of Newport County.

Carlisle's meagre two wins at Orient have both been by 1-0 scorelines. The first victory coming in the 1973-74 season in the old Division Two with a goal in the opening 45 minutes from Dennis Martin as 7,645 spectators looked on, the Blues eventually pipping Orient to promotion to the top tier of English football by just one point come the end of the campaign. The second win happened 25 years later in the 1999-2000 season when Matthew Pitts secured all three points in the 83rd minute in front of 3,871 fans, in another campiagn of that era which saw the Cumbrians escape relegation by the skin of their teeth.
