History of the Carlisle United v Hereford United fixture

Carlisle welcome Hereford to Cumbria tomorrow evening looking to continue a useful record at home against the Bulls. The Blues having won seven, drawn two and lost three of the 12 games over the years.

The last time the two teams met at Brunton Park was four and a half years ago in October 2004, with Carlisle running out comfortable 3-1 winners in a Nationwide Conference encounter in front of a healthy 6,772 spectators.

A Lee Andrews own goal had put the visitors 1-0 up after just 20 minutes but United came storming back to score three goals in a seven minute spell either side of half-time. Magno Vieira bagging a quickfire brace on 41 and 42 minutes before Peter Murphy drilled a shot home two minutes after the interval.

Carlisle's best win at home to Hereford over the years was a 3-0 victory way back in the old Division Four season of 1988-89. That campaign seeing both sides finish in the mid-table reaches of the table, United that Saturday afternoon, with just 2,548 fans watching on, claiming all three points thanks to two goals from Tony Fyfe and a single Derek Walsh strike.

All of Hereford's three wins at Brunton Park have been by a one-goal margin, the most recent of those coming in Carlisle's Division Three (fourth tier) promotion winning season of 1996-97. That being a shock 3-2 win for a Bulls side who were eventually relegated to the Conference on the last day of the campaign after drawing 1-1 at home to Brighton, the Seagulls saving their own skin through a Robbie Reinelt goal to finish on the same points as Hereford but with a better goals scored record.

Their win at Carlisle in mid-March actually came after United had raced into a 2-0 lead after just 16 minutes when Paul Conway and Chris Freestone had scored. Hereford produced a stirring fightback though with Adrian Foster the key as the former Kidderminster man bagged a hat-trick on 17, 38 and 51 minutes in front of 5,063 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle need to improve on their recent dreadful home record of just three draws from their previous six matches at Brunton Park. While the Cumbrians have scored just five goals in those games, a worringly large ten have been leaked at the other end.

Hereford's away form is none too clever either though, accumulating just one victory and one draw from their last six games on the road. While the Bulls have hit six goals in those matches, an enormous 15 have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle find themselves struggling down in 16th position in the league having picked up 42 points from their 38 matches played so far. Hereford meanwhile are even worse off as they currently sit second bottom in the League One table with a return of just 30 points from their 36 games contested to date.
