History of the Carlisle United v Gillingham fixture

The Blues welcome the Gills to Cumbria this weekend, and hold a slight advantage in previous games. Of the 21 matches played, United have notched 11 wins, and Gillingham have come away with a healthy eight victories.

The previous time the two teams met at Brunton Park was last season when Carlisle thumped the Gills 5-0 in front of 6,087 spectators. United being just 1-0 up after 81 minutes thanks to an early Peter Murphy strike only to score four in an action packed last nine minutes. Luke Joyce, Kevin Gall and Danny Graham with two goals all featuring on the Cumbrians scoresheet as Gillingham capitulated late on.

That game is Carlisle's best ever home win over the Gills, with their next best coming in the 1989-90 Division Four campaign when they won 3-0 thanks to goals from Paul Proudlock, Paul Fitzpatrick and David Miller in front of a Brunton Park crowd of just 3,185. That season, due to an awful run of form after Christmas, seeing Carlisle slide out of the automatic promotion spots, and eventually the play-off places, on the last day of the season after a 5-2 hammering away to another Kent side, in Maidstone.

Despite the lengthy journey up to Cumbria, Gillingham have had some big wins at United over the years, the best of those coming the season after Carlisle's best win at home in 1990-91. The Gills going home with a thumping 4-0 victory thanks to a brace from Steve Lovell and further goals from Peter Beadle and David Crown, with only 2,633 fans fans inside Brunton Park that March Tuesday night to witness the hammering.

Recent respective form guides

United have only performed averagely at home recently, winning three and losing two of their last six matches at Brunton Park. A total of ten goals have been scored by the Cumbrians in those games, with six conceded.

The away form of Gillingham is pretty dire, losing every one of their last six matches played away from the Priestfield Stadium. The Gills have conceded a horrendous 19 goals in these games, while only hitting a meagre one in reply.

United's total of 18 points from their 11 games played sees them sitting in the play-off places in the League One table. Meanwhile Gillingham find themselves struggling down in 18th position in the league having picked up 11 points from their 11 matches contested.

FootyMad's prediction ...

It's a close one to call, but I think that the Cumbrians's reasonable showing at home is going to see them scrape past Gillingham. Home Win
