Footymad preview History of the Coventry City v Carlisle United fixture

With the two sides having been in different divisions for all but five years since United came into the Football League back in 1928, you have to go back to Carlisle's old First Division season of 1974-75 to find the last time the teams locked horns in a league match. The Cumbrians going down 2-1 in front of 16,970 fans inside Highfield Road, with Frank Clarke on the scoresheet for United.

That game was one of four defeats Carlisle have suffered in their five matches away to Coventry, with all of them coming by a slender one goal margin courtesy of two 3-2 losses and a brace of 2-1 defeats. That one goal also the distance of United's victory in their sole success at the Sky Blues in the old Fourth Division in the 1958-59 campaign, that 2-1 win seeing Cumbrian goals scored by Alf Ackerman and Ron Tulloch as 19,153 spectators looked on.

Recent respective form guides

Coventry have only collected one win and three draws, alongside two defeats from their last six home games played. The Sky Blues have scored seven goals in these games, but have also conceded nine. Carlisle's away form is none too clever either though, accumulating just one victory and one draw, with four losses, from their last six matches played on the road. While the Cumbrians have notched five goals in those matches, nine have hit the back of the wrong net.

Coventry, in 23rd place on goals scored above rock bottom Bury, are stuck down in the relegation zone of npower League One with a return of just three points from their seven games played so far. Carlisle meanwhile, in 14th place, see themselves just below half-way in the table, showing a record of nine points picked up from their seven games contested to date.
