History of the Chesterfield v Carlisle United fixture

The Blues travel to Derbyshire to take on the Spireites tomorrow evening, having come away with precious little in previous meetings, being beaten a depressing 25 out of 33 times at Saltergate, and taking just 18 points out of a possible 99 while shipping a mammoth 77 goals in the process.

The last time the two teams met at Chesterfield was back in February 2001, over five years ago, when the two sides shared the spoils courtesy of a 1-1 draw in a Division Three match. United being cruelly denied from gaining all three points that night by a 90th minute equaliser from Luke Beckett, Ian Stevens having given Carlisle the lead after 16 minutes in front of a crowd of 3,796 at Saltergate, the Cumbrians eventually finishing 22nd that season as Barnet were relegated to the Conference.

Most Blues fans will prefer to remember the game in the 1994-95 title-winning season though, when Tony Elliott had an outstanding game in goal as he stood in for number one keeper Tony Caig. Top scorer David Reeves bagging a brace that night as Elliott made save after save in the latter stages of the match to preserve a 2-1 win for the Cumbrians, when the night was supposed to have been a promotion party for the home side in front of a bumper crowd of 7,283 spectators, Chesterfield having to settle for promotion via the play-off system in the end.

Recent respective form guides

Chesterfield's home form is most definitely relegation standard, collecting just three solitary points from the last thirty, having not win at Saltergate in their last ten games, their last victory on home turf coming way back in early January against Bradford. That run of ten winless matches has seen them concede a monstrous 26 goals and score just ten.

Carlisle's away form is excellent in their last ten league games on the road, losing just the once and claiming five wins, United scoring a healthy 19 goals on the way while conceding only six.

The Spireites are joint top in the League One table after the first match following an excellent 3-0 win at Bournemouth, while the Blues are joint third after defeating Doncaster 1-0 at home on the opening day of the season.
