Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Bury fixture

The Blues welcome the Shakers to Cumbria on Saturday afternoon, with high hopes of improving on their excellent record against the opposition, having chalked up an impressive 13 wins out of 18 previous matches between the two sides, Bury meanwhile winning the other five games with there being one draw. That doesn't add up you say, well United once beat the Shakers in the 2002-03 season on the golden goal rule in the Associate Members Trophy after the game had been drawn over 90 minutes, so that counts as a win and a draw, or something.

The last time the two teams met at Brunton Park was over six years ago now back in January 2006, as Carlisle swept to an impressive 4-0 win in a League Two match on their way to the title that season. Simon Grand and Zigor Aranalde putting United 2-0 up at the break, in front of 6,398 spectators, before Karl Hawley and Brendan McGill completed the rout after half-time.

That, alongside a 5-1 win in September 1992 at fourth tier level, is Carlisle's biggest margin of victory over the Shakers, the Blues goals that Tuesday evening, as 4,650 fans looked on, scored by Ricardo Gabbiadini, George Oghani with two, Andy Watson and Neil Williams, while Andy Kilner notched the solitary reply for the visitors.

Bury's best victory of their five at Carlisle over the years meanwhile came in the 1977-78 season in the old Division Three. The goals for the Shakers that Saturday, in a campaign in which the teams would finish separated by just two places and two points with Carlisle 13th and Bury 15th, being scored by Andy Rowland with two and Peter Farrell with one in front of 4,405 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle are in decent form at home, having won four and drawn two of their last six games at Brunton Park. A healthy total of twelve goals have been scored by the Cumbrians in those games, with six conceded. In complete contrast to Carlisle meanwhile, Bury are having a torrid time on their travels, collecting just one solitary point from their last six games on the road. While the Shakers have only netted five goals in those matches, a massive 15 have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle, in seventh place, lie just outside the play-off positions in the npower League One table, picking up 52 points from their 33 games so far. Bury on the other hand see themselves just below the half-way point in the division, showing a record of 41 points from their 35 matches contested to date.
