United Sneak Past Shrimps In Tight Replay

In what often proved to be a dour game for large periods, Carlisle took the lead with what was the first chance of the replay, following the 2-2 draw at Brunton Park ten days earlier. Joe Anyinsah set away free down the right-hand channel by Graham Kavanagh after five minutes, Anyinsah then holding his nerve 15 yards out to crash a right-footed effort into the Morecambe net.

The Shrimps soon fought back though and were often the better side in the game, Ian Craney wasting a good chance as he volleyed a Craig Stanley cross over the top moments later. Paul Mullin then the next Morecambe man to miss out as he dallied too long on a one-on-one chance with Lenny Pidgeley and allowed Danny Livesey to clear the United lines.

Dave Artell then heading wide before spooning a shot from a corner over Pidgeley's crossbar on 20 minutes. Pidgeley then tipping a pacey Phil Jevons free-kick over the top only for referee Jonathan Moss to bizarrely award a goal-kick. Kavanagh then sticking a shot narrowly wide for the Cumbrians on the break before Artell missed out again when he headed a corner inches over.

It was still mainly Morecambe attacking and Jevons fired a shot across goal which Stanley could then only lash into the United side-netting from a tight angle. Richard Keogh then slicing a shot well wide in a rare Carlisle move forward before the Shrimps almost equalised seconds before the half-time whistle. A cross-shot from Michael Twiss being palmed away in front of goal by Pidgeley, Harte then able to make a last-ditch clearance for the visitors.

Jevons was always looking dangerous for the home side upfront and and he had the first shot at goal after the interval, his 22-yarder being watched wide by a grateful Pidgeley. With 50 minutes gone and the Blues were appealing for a penalty when Keogh went to ground in the Morecambe box, it looked a little bit more like a dive though and play was waved on.

Four minutes later and neither Artell nor Twiss could find the Carlisle net when Adam Clayton was twice well-placed to clear away their goalbound efforts as a Morecambe corner caused problems for the visitors defence. Roche then making a save with his feet up at the other end when Pericard fired in a powerful angled effort.

The Shrimps went close to equalising in the 77th minute though when their man of the match Stanley broke forward at pace before curling a shot across goal which drifted just wide of the United back-post. Tom Taiwo then missing a good chance to make it 2-0 to Carlisle five minutes later though when he struck an effort straight at Roche from 22 yards out.

Morecambe themselves however not really having any further chances to force extra-time in the closing stages as the visitors saw out time to the final whistle with relative ease. United now going on to a home second round tie against Norwich City, that will be broadcast live on the FA website, while, after missing chances in both games, Morecambe will be left to reflect on what might have been.
