The former Tranmere striker getting the only goal of the game in the 36th minute with an expertly curled strike beyond Nicky Weaver from the edge of the Owls penalty area. The visitors having chances to go further clear, which they were unable to take, before the home side put on some late pressure to no avail as they lost their place at the top of League One to free-scoring Peterborough.

The Cumbrians started brightly in front of over 2,000 of their own supporters and went close as early as the fourth minute when, from a Francois Zoko through ball, Gary Madine should have done better when he could only fire a shot straight at Weaver. Ten minutes later and Chris Sedgwick got a low effort in for the home side but it was well blocked by United left-back Sean McDaid.

Marcus Tudgay then sliced a shot up in the air from a corner shortly afterwards before in the 23rd minute Carlisle responded with a long range Zoko strike that was scuffed well wide. After Wednesday's Clinton Morrison had a close range effort saved by Adam Collin as the offside flag went up, Madine headed goalwards in the 28th minute from a James Berrett corner but Lewis Buxton was well placed for the Owls to hack the ball away from danger.

Moments later and Sedgwick was booked for a foul on Zoko, and then after 36 minutes Curran opened the scoring for Carlisle when he curled home a shot from 18 yards out past the despairing dive of Weaver. Wednesday then looking to level two minutes later but an unmarked Tudgay could only head poorly wide from a Gary Teale corner that flew deep into the United penalty area.

The Blues though twice going close to making it 2-0 at the break when firstly on 43 minutes Zoko set up Berrett for a long range half-volleyed effort that flew straight into the arms of Weaver. Then part-way through a lengthy period of injury time Zoko, from a Madine flick-on, found Weaver in action as the ex-Manchester City goalkeeper made another good save in the Wednesday net.

Eight minutes into the second-half and it was the visitors attacking again when a cross in from Berrett saw Zoko sending a header goalwards only for Weaver to make another good save, with Tommy Spurr then able to clear the Wednesday lines. Darren Purse then moments later almost slicing into his own net as Carlisle pressed forward again, Darren Potter though clearing the ball off the home line to keep the scoreline down to 1-0.

The game started to get a little more end to end now as the off colour Owls began to up their own pace in front of an edgy home crowd in an effort to find an equalising goal that would have come somewhat against the run of play. Tudgay first having his close range shot hoofed away by McDaid, before Sedgwick flicked a header narrowly wide from a Teale cross into the Carlisle box.

Just after the hour-mark and United were back at it however when Curran had a long range strike deflected over the top. Then with 68 minutes on the clock, following a pacey Blues counter-attack which eventually found Lewis Buxton conceding a corner with an excellent headed clearance, James Chester sent his own header narrowly wide of the target from Berrett's delivery in.

Giles Coke, who had a very quiet day by his own standards, sent a weak free-kick straight into the hands of Collin with 20 minutes to but Wednesday had a much better chance to find a late leveller on 79 minutes when Spurr smacked in a half-volley from 20 yards out that whistled inches past the visitors woodwork. Zoko and Purse then getting involved in a bout of handbags shortly afterwards with the United man seemingly the angrier of the two players.

Six minutes from time and on the break Madine ran on before whacking in a low drive that Weaver did well to parry away from danger. Owls substitute James O'Connor then thrashing a long range shot wide from a partly cleared corner with Wednesday's last chance of the game, as the whistle came four minutes into injury time on a deserved three points for the visitors.
