United Lose Out In Dour Encounter

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides and had an early corner in the first minute which only ended up in a Blues free-kick. Shortly afterwards and Carlisle had their opening chance of the game when Craig Curran turned on Peter Murphy's pass and looked to get a shot away, which was well blocked by the long legs of Mark Beevers.

Danny Livesey then at the other end getting in a similar block on a Tommy Miller 18-yard drive with ten minutes on the clock. Wednesday then five minutes later keeping up their spell of pressure when the returning Gary Madine headed a Tommy Spurr cross over the top from ten yards out, Liam Palmer then having a shot deflected straight into the arms of Adam Collin sixty seconds later.

The visitors did take the lead after 20 minutes however when that man Madine at the near-post flicked a Spurr corner across goal which was cleared off the line by Matty Robson, the loose ball falling to Miller who was able to lash a half-volley home from close range, albeit via the face of Collin. The Owls still looking the more likely to create a chance seven minutes later when Gary Teale cut in at pace from the left only to hit a weak right-footed effort straight at Collin.

The very impressive visitors midfielder Isaiah Osbourne then went into the book for a late challenge on Tom Taiwo, before Carlisle went as close to scoring as they would do all afternoon when Ben Marshall ran in from the left and curled a 15-yarder across goal that brought a good parried save out of Nicky Weaver away to his left. United in a good spell, then going close again when in the 41st minute Francois Zoko flicked a James Berrett pass up for Craig Curran to volley across goal but wide of the far-post.

The Owls made a change during the interval as Darren Potter came on in place of Palmer, but it was more of the same at the start of the second-half as both sides played the ball long, with a negative Wednesday packing their defence and midfield and easily keeping at bay a Carlisle side who seemed utterly devoid of any ideas to how break their opponents down.

It was the 57th minute when the next chance came along as Curran set up Berrett for an 18-yard drive that dragged away wide of the target, with Curran then moving over to the right as Rory Loy came on in place of Liam Noble and United went to a 4-4-2 formation. The Owls then had two good opportunities to score in quick succession when Teale scooped a poor effort over the top from 12 yards out, then Potter sliced a Madine cross miles wide of Collin's goal.

Just before the midway point in the second-half and Potter had a shot deflected away from danger off Livesey before Carlisle made their second substitution when Paddy Madden came in on place of Zoko. Madine then leaving the field to a good round of applause from the United faithful as he was replaced by Clinton Morrison as the Owls sole frontman in the match.

Youth-teamer Ben Mckenna then made his league debut for the Cumbrians as he came on in place of Curran, with the right-footed Mckenna going over to the left and Marshall moving onto the right-wing. With little action at either end it was another substitution that next caught the eye as Dan Jones replaced Teale for the Owls, and then Miller was booked for dissent by referee Lee Coote.

Carlisle's only chances to nab a late equaliser coming as we ticked around injury time with a couple of goalmouth scrambles from their only two corners in the game. The closest United came in those skirmishes being a Loy shot that was very well blocked as the visitors were then able to easily see out the clock to claim their first away league win in over three months.
