Town controlling the match from an early stage when they took the lead in the sixth minute through Lee Novak, Jordan Rhodes then doubling their advantage 11 minutes into the second half. Substitute Joe Anyinsah's injury time strike for Carlisle therefore proving to be nothing but a consolation for a home side who were outplayed by the visitors for large periods of the match.

The Terriers started as they meant to go in the game when Novak had a shot deflected wide and then Rhodes headed narrowly off target from the resultant Anthony Pilkington. Town did take the lead on six minutes though when a Lee Peltier ball over the top was poorly misjudged by Ian Harte, Novak then easily taking possession round an advancing Adam Collin before stroking a shot home into the empty net.

Carlisle looked to come back into things two minutes later but Adam Clayton's half-volley from a partly cleared Peter Murphy cross flew well over the top. Up at the other end Pilkington curled a shot too high and into the Warwick Road End, before United had another half chance only for Matty Robson to volley well over the top. Peter Clarke then heading over from a visitors corner before Paul Thirlwell had to make a good block on a Peltier shot.
