Preece and Hawley: Five of the 7 goals that destroyed Boro
The Cumbrians are in SEVENTH heaven tonight after recording a massive win against struggling Farnborough Town.

Karl Hawley knocked in a hat-trick and veteran Andy Preece grabbed two as Carlisle took a 5-0 half-time advantage. They took their foot off the pedal a little in the second half but still added two further goals to record their biggest win since 1963.

The onslaught began in the seventh minute as Hawley took advantage of some Keystone cops defending with keeper Holloway trying to head out and losing posession to Preece who allowed the former Walsall man to lob the ball into an unguarded net. Carlisle had a big shout for a penalty shortly after but the ref gave a free kick on the edge after Hawley went sprawling inside the area. On 15 minutes it was two-nil as McGill was tripped by Taggart and Preece stepped up to net the penalty kick with aplomb.

The carnage was mounting in the 19th minute when Murphy robbed a defender on the left side of the box and crossed for Hawley to head home from six yards out. On 28 minutes Hawley completed one of the quickest United hat-tricks in history when another defensive gaffe allowed Preece in to cross to him into the box and he headed again past Holloway. The fifth arrived on 35 minutes when yet more comedy defending from poor Holloway allowed Preece to get through and clip into the far corner of the net.

It was almost impossible for the second half to match the first, but United did add more to the tally. Chris Billy made a nice goal for Magno Vieira when he took on Preece's pass and found the Brazilian whose first time touch tucked the ball home with comfort. Farnborough did have a few half chances in the match but keeper Glennon was rarely troubled. The final nail in the Boro coffin was administered by McGill who ran on to through ball and went round the keeper before clipping the ball in from a tight angle.

Al's verdict: A fantastic result, although desperate defending from the visitors was a large contributory factor. Preece and Hawley were outstanding up front, taking nearly every chance that fell their way. Lumsdon again was a controlling influence in the middle of the park and of course Vieira impressed hugely. There won't be many games as one-sided as this, so poor teams have to be put to the sword when the chance comes. This result should give the lads a load of confidence to take into a testing looking trip to Halifax on Tuesday night.
