Hawley - opened scoring
A double strike in the space of five minutes sealed a win for Carlisle and saw them climb to third in the table.

Karl Hawley and Glenn Murray were the heroes for the Cumbrians as their 2-0 victory left Macclesfield still looking for their first point away from Moss Rose.

Hawley broke the deadlock in the 75th minute with the first goal in seven games for the hard working front-man.

Zigor Aranalde's cross was poorly cleared by ex-Carlisle favourite David Morley, leaving Hawley unmarked on the edge of the box to fire a low shot past Alan Fettis and into the far bottom corner of the net.

United wrapped up the points six minutes later when substitute Glenn Murray, on for just five minutes in place of the superb Simon Hackney, nodded in at the far post.

Full-back Aranalde was yet again the provider as he jinked past two Macclesfield defenders before crossing to the back post for Murray to score, although Fettis only just failed to keep the ball out as it crossed the line.

A poor first half had only been brought to life when Carlisle winger Simon Hackney, making his first ever league start, had the ball, with the former Liverpool youngster terrifying the Macclesfield defence with his lightening pace and direct running.

Hitman Allan Russell had the Silkmen's best chance when he ran unopposed through the Carlisle defence only to fire straight at Anthony Williams.

The second half was a livelier affair and Russell went close again but Williams tipped over.

Chris Lumsdon, back from injury for his first game of the season, also went close with two efforts.

The Silkmen should have taken the lead in the 71st minute when sub John Miles crossed to Russell who glanced his header on to the post.

William's fumbled and Danny Whitaker fired in a shot only for the keeper to make a great point blank save, leaving Aranalde to clear off the line.

The goals sent a buzz around the home crowd and Raphael Nade and Murray both went close to adding a third, although anything more would have been harsh on Macclesfield.

After the match United boss Paul Simpson said : "It was a poor first-half display from us. We set out to attack them but it didn't work out as we planned.

"We knew we had to be patient over the 90 minutes and I was pleased with the way we kept working.

"I'm confident that we have the right players to do well in this division."

Brian Horton, manager of Macclesfield Town, said : "We did alright in the first half and I really thought we came out and played well in the second until they scored.

"There's not a lot wrong with what we're doing at the moment, we've just got to keep on plugging away.

"We didn't do enough up front and we're really missing Jon Parkin.

"Things didn't go our way as we hit the post just before they scored. That was at 0-0 and if that had gone in anything could have happened."
