Cumbrians ride their luck

Carlisle returned to winning ways in npower League One with a determined display to triumph 2-1 at luckless Tranmere.

The visitors took just three minutes to gain the lead with Lee Miller tapping in from close range after Rory Loy had helped on a cross by Matty Robson.

Tranmere were almost level within sixty seconds, but United goalkeeper Adam Collin tipped an Enoch Showunmi effort over the crossbar.

Liam Noble was not far away with a 25-yard shot for Carlisle, but the visitors doubled their advantage with a 35th-minute penalty converted by James Berrett after Dave Raven had needlessly tripped Loy near the corner of the box..

Tranmere defender David Buchanan headed Noble's effort off the goalline two minutes later, but the Merseysiders were back in contention in the 51st minute as Lucas Akins' steered home a rebound after goalkeeper Adam Collin had punched out Robbie Weir's shot.

Josh Labadie had no luck with three efforts as the home side searched in vain for a equaliser.
