There were smiles all round at Edgeley Park as Stockport survived the dreaded drop and Carlisle's point meant they were confirmed as League Two champions.

An electric atmosphere greeted the teams, and it was the home side who caught the first sight of goal when Jamie Ward flicked a shot just wide at the near post.

With just five minutes gone Adam Griffin raced on to Liam Dickinson's through-ball, but Carlisle goalkeeper Keiren Westwood came out bravely to smother the shot.

Kevin O'Connor then fired a deflected shot just wide as Stockport kept up their early momentum.

League two's champions-elect were having difficulty containing a determined Stockport outfit, and next to go close was loan midfielder Jason Taylor as he shot narrowly over from 20 yards.

Adam Murray flashed a shot well wide for the Cumbrians, but Stockport responded when Tes Bramble flicked the ball into the visitors' box only for Dickinson to head straight at Westwood.

Home fans' nerves were always going to be frayed, but goalkeeper James Spencer came to the rescue after 25 minutes when he superbly beat out a bullet header from Glenn Murray.

The game started to settle down, but Stockport fans were screaming for a spot-kick after 35 minutes when defender Zigor Aranalde looked to have handled in the box.

Dickinson flicked a Griffin corner just over as Stockport rallied again, but these had looked like two well-matched teams in the first period.

Murray fired a shot well over for the first chance of the second half, but Stockport responded when Bramble let fly from 20 yards only for Westwood to save acrobatically. From the resultant corner kick, County skipper Keith Briggs thumped a header against the Carlisle crossbar.

Stockport kept on plugging away, and twice within two minutes just beyond the hour mark Griffin was unlucky not to score. The second time his fancy scissor-kick was well saved by Westwood.

Carlisle's Chris Billy went close to a first goal of the season when he screwed a shot inches wide, but it remained goal-less and at least both sets of fans went home happy.
