A superb Michael Bridges double edged Carlisle to the brink of the League Two championship after coming from a goal down to beat Notts County in the dying seconds.

Bridges' magic has almost singled-handedly kept the Cumbrians' promotion charge on course, and yet again he lit up a dire game with two finishes rarely seen at the bottom rung of the Football League.

But it was far from plain sailing for Carlisle, and the Magpies almost stole a point for their efforts. They deservedly went ahead after 25 minutes when stand-in striker David Pipe sliced the home defence open with a well-hit pass to Steve Scoffham, and the young striker lobbed his shot beyond the reach of Keiren Westwood.

The goal did little to inspire either side until Bridges' first intervention deep into first-half injury time. Peter Murphy's deep free-kick wasn't dealt with by the County defence and Bridges, lurking outside the corner of the penalty box, lashed an unstoppable 25-yard volley past Kevin Pilkington.

It was cruel on the visitors and they were powerless to prevent the Carlisle onslaught in the second half.

Glenn Murray and Adam Murray both went close with headers before Karl Hawley and Bridges both found the net only to be denied by the offside flag.

With time running out for Carlisle, Hawley failed to control the ball in the box but kept his feet to back-heel to the on-rushing Bridges, and with the 10,735 crowd rising in anticipation, the ex-Premiership striker rammed in a low drive from 18 yards for his 15th goal of the season.

Energy sapped and deflated, the County players failed to muster a response, leaving Carlisle with all three points and just one draw away from a second successive promotion.
