Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 26 April 2010 By Thetashkentterror
Preston may have won the title last week but they didn't take their foot off the gas at the weekend as they defeated rock-bottom Accrington Stanley 2-0 at home. Next up, Rochdale made sure of runners-up spot with a 5-1 win on home soil over Morecambe, while Shrewsbury in third and Stockport in fourth also ended their campaigns with home victories, 3-0 and 4-2 against Oldham and Tranmere respectively.

One side did get a win on the road though and that was Walsall in fifth who hammered Wigan 5-1 in Lancashire. Another Lancastrian club, in Burnley, making up the top six although the Clarets did lose during the week, 2-1 away to Macclesfield. The Silkmen having a good few days as they then went on to defeat Carlisle 3-1 at home on Saturday, United's goal coming from Dan Jones.

The young Blues had taken three points earlier in the week with an excellent 1-0 win at Stockport though, 16-year old Adam Gill getting the first-half goal for Carlisle. Elsewhere in mid-table, Bury's season ended with a good 3-0 victory at Port Vale, while this afternoon Wrexham beat Blackpool 3-1 at home. The Seasiders only just avoiding the wooden spoon this year with a minus 33 goal difference compared to Accrington's minus 36.

After that game in North Wales today there are now six games left in the division this season, with Carlisle involved in two of them at home, first against Preston on Saturday morning and then finally Wigan on Tuesday afternoon. Two of the other four remaining fixtures are Macclesfield v Rochdale, that being the case due to the vagaries of the youth league which say that one team must face another one at home twice during the campaign, quite why is anybody's guess.
