Youth Team League Weekend Update

Preston took a big step towards winning the title over the weekend as, at this late stage of the season, they picked up three points while previously second placed Shrewsbury lost. North End defeating Port Vale 3-1 on the road, while Rochdale leapfrogged the Shrews in the table by defeating them 4-2 at the Sundorne Sports Village in Shropshire.

Stockport are in fourth and they managed to scrape a 1-0 home win over rock-bottom Accrington Stanley, while Burnley won the battle of sixth and fifth by claiming victory 4-2 away to Walsall. Into the mid-table reaches and Wigan defeated Bury 4-1 at home on Saturday, Bury though having taken three points on Tuesday when they beat Morecambe 2-0 on their own soil.

Macclesfield have been struggling this season and they lost 1-0 at Oldham, while even further down the table Blackpool and Tranmere shared a point apiece in a 1-1 stalemate on Friday afternoon. Morecambe the only side out of action over the weekend itself as they were went meant to have been playing the now defunct Chester City.

Meanwhile Carlisle, the only team in the division yet to draw a league game this season, won 2-0 at Wrexham, the United goals coming from schoolboys Dan Jones and Mark Beck. This week Carlisle don't have a game on Saturday, the young Blues only set to take on Accrington Stanley at home on Tuesday afternoon in a 2pm kick-off at Creighton Rugby Club.

The big game next weekend being Preston taking on Shrewsbury at home, North End actually able to win the title next week if results go their way. Finally, away from league action, Stockport play Macclesfield on Wednesday in the northern area final of the League Cup for the right to face Queens Park Rangers in the overall final.
