Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 30 April 2009 By Thetashkentterror
Burnley kept up their effort to catch Wrexham and nick the title with a 2-1 win at home to Oldham, the Clarets now five points behind the Red Dragons, whose season finished last Saturday, with two games left that they have to win. Burnley though having lost another youth match in midweek, that being 3-2 at Preston on Wednesday night in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup Final.

That was North End's first game of two last week and they won again on Saturday morning, 3-2 once more, at Creighton Rugby Club in Carlisle's final outing of the season. An injury-hit United side being 3-0 down with only 30 minutes on the clock before Andy Cook almost gave the young Blues an unlikely looking point with two goals early in the second-half. That a result that now means Carlisle will finish third in the table for the second season in a row.

Macclesfield have timed a late run of form well and they are now fifth after leapfrogging Wigan by defeating the Latics 4-2 at home. In a mid-table battle Tranmere drew 2-2 on the Wirral against Shrewsbury, while down at the wrong end of the division Stockport ended their campaign with a 1-0 win at Bury on Wednesday and Morecambe and Bury drew 2-2 on the Lancashire coast on Saturday morning.

Outside of the division Grimsby Town surprisingly won 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday night at Loftus Road in the final of the League Cup, where North eventually plays South at the end of the competition. The Mariners coming from behind thanks to goals from Kiel Thompson and Danny Freeman on 41 and 56 minutes respectively after Josh Parker had put the Hoops ahead with only six minutes on the clock.
