Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 20 April 2009 By Thetashkentterror
The title is all but in Wrexham's hands now as Carlisle and Burnley both suffered further setbacks in the face of heavy fixture schedules, particularly in the case of the Clarets. The Welsh side taking advantage at youth team level of having no reserve side which has led to their lads being fresh every Saturday playing just one a game week, the Red Dragons this Saturday defeating rock-bottom Accrington Stanley 3-0 at home.

Burnley played two games over this weekend and they didn't win either of them, the Turf Moor outfit going down 1-0 at Macclesfield on Saturday and drawing 2-2 at home to Shrewsbury this afternoon. Those results meaning the Clarets now have to win their last three matches to nick the title off Wrexham, who have finished their season, by a point.

Preston remain in fourth spot but they lost on Saturday 4-2 away to last season's title-winners Walsall. Wigan coming next in fifth with the Latics drawing 2-2 at home to a rapidly improving Rochdale outfit. Tranmere have been struggling recently in the lower mid-table reaches but, after drawing 0-0 at home to Stockport on Tuesday, they bounced back to form in another home fixture on Saturday, Rovers thumping Oldham 5-0.

Stockport might have been in a dour game during the week but they more than made up for it at the weekend with a 4-4 draw at home to Morecambe, that rounding off a good week for the Shrimps who had earlier defeated Accrington 3-0 at home on Thursday. Blackpool meanwhile have had a dreadful campaign and they finished it with a 4-0 defeat at lowly Chester, that assuring the Seasiders end the season second bottom in the table.

Carlisle are currently sitting in second but after losing their third away game in a row, this time 2-0 at Shrewsbury less than 48 hours after being taken to extra-time at Workington in the Cumberland Cup, they are now just one point ahead of Burnley in third. So it looks like successive seasons of finishing third in the division for United, who will be looking to finish the campaign with a flourish in their last fixture, at home to Preston in an 11am kick-off on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the division there are still games in hand to be played for some teams this coming weekend after the scheduled end to the season, as well as Burnley playing at Preston in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup final on Wednesday night. Another final taking place tomorrow evening as QPR host Grimsby in the League Cup, the Loftus Road club going into that game as red hot favourites.
