Youth Team League Weekend Update

Last updated : 06 April 2009 By Thetashkentterror
There were goals aplenty in the league yesterday as 42 efforts hit the net in the nine games taking place. There were only two goals up at the top of the table though as Wrexham surprisingly dropped two points at lowly Blackpool with a 1-1 draw. The Red Dragons missing the chance to knock Carlisle out of the title race, but they can still do that next Saturday if they win and United don't take all three points at home to Stockport.

Wrexham's draw has done Burnley a big favour after the young Clarets lost 1-0 in North Wales last Saturday. Burnley, after defeating Chester 3-0 at home yesterday, are now nine points behind the Red Dragons but they have a massive five games in hand.

Whether the Clarets can keep their energy levels up though with seven youth fixtures and seven reserve matches left to play in little over a month, as well as the fact that their Lancashire FA Youth Cup campaign is still at the quarter-final stage remains to be seen.

Preston had won 11 games out of 12 before yesterday but their charge up the table was halted by mid-table Tranmere who defeated them 3-1 at home. Wigan have now moved up to sixth in the table after winning 2-0 at rock-bottom Accrington Stanley, while Macclesfield are also having a good end to the season, the Silkmen thumping Bury 5-2 on the road.

The other three matches contained a bumper 20 goals with Oldham and Rochdale having entertaining 4-3 victories at home to Stockport and last season's title-winners Walsall respectively. Finally second-bottom Morecambe grabbed only their fourth win of the season, 4-2 at home to Shrewsbury, the Shrimps now only two points behind Blackpool with two games in hand.

As we already know Carlisle won 3-1 at home to fifth-placed Port Vale in a particularly windy encounter, the United goals scored by Ryan Bowman, Jonny Blake and Conor Tinnion. Next Saturday the young Blues are at home again in an 11am kick-off against Stockport, with the venue yet to be confirmed.
