Youth Team League Weekend Update

We do things simpler in the North where our part of the draw is simply a round by round format, whereas down South the teams go through initial group phases before eight of them qualify for the quarter-finals. Surviving into the second round from United's North-West division are Blackpool (bye in first round), Burnley, Carlisle, Macclesfield, Morecambe, Oldham, Rochdale, Shrewsbury, Tranmere, and potentially Preston.

Wigan began the most surprising losers in the opening stage of the competition as the unbeaten Latics lost 3-0 at home to a Darlington side that Carlisle beat 4-0 on the road in the same cup last season. Meanwhile Grimsby were the only side in the round to need penalties to settle their tie as they knocked out holders Hull City 8-7 on spot-kicks.

All the results from the weekend are listed below, with a full round of league action back on the go next week, United themselves taking on Bury in an 11am kick-off at Gillford Park on Saturday morning.
