So it was back to Youth Cup action tonight for Carlisle, as the lads looked to take their first step back to the quarter-finals that they did so well to reach last year. The home side, unsurprisingly started the game well as they put good pressure on a United back-line that was well marshalled throughout by centre-halves Terry Stewart and Dan Wordsworth, Cumbrians goalkeeper Grant Carson also deserving a special mention for keeping a lively Wrexham front-line at bay.

The Blues came out stronger in the second-half than they had in the first and took the lead just after the hour mark when Matthew Brown, playing at right-back, cut inside from his flank and launched a fierce 25-yard left-footed effort across Red Dragons keeper Vinnie Whelan and into the far top corner of the Wrexham net.

Mark Stewart, who was on form upfront for the home side all night, struck the crossbar with a curling effort as Wrexham piled on the pressure in their search for an equaliser. Paul Williams moved in on the shot from close range to knock home the rebound but the young Cumbrians had already been saved by a flag raised for offside.

The Red Dragons went to four upfront in the closing stages and that allowed United some room on the break, Stephen Hindmarch missing a great chance to double Carlisle's lead late on when he got on the end of a Mike Stewardson cross in. There was still time for more entertainment though as the Blues clung on for victory in the five minutes of time added on, home glovesman Whelan, who had come up from the back for a corner, receiving a straight red card for appearing to punch his opposite number as both sides battled for possession.
